Before I knew of the Stagbreaker trick. I was breaking the scrap pile a little at a time, on one side. Leaving some on the left to stop them from coming through, and I would take them down with my bow to clear the room. including killing the bone pile before actually going into the room. It didnt always work out great. But when I died, at least they were still stuck in that room when I came back for my corpse.
