Its hard to sort through a large pile of stuff if you find you need something. You can stack chests up with basic building in a way that lets you fit 4 into a 2 meter by 1 meter area. You can also fill up carts and just leave them in an area that will let you remember what is in them (like large amounts of wood or stone). Its much easier to organize the loot that you don't want to get rid of that way. You can also organize wood, stone, and gold into piles inside your base that you can later deconstruct and use.
