Same thing goes with a co-op player throws a spear and I auto pickup his spear, now I have to find it in my inventory to return it (during a fight).
yea, I can toggle auto-pickup but if I am carrying nothing, it should be automatically disabled until I pickup an item, then re-enable. it's annoying. also is returning a thrown spear to whoever threw it. What, I'm supposed to remember to disable auto pickup during every fight so as to not accidentally pickup my co-op players spear?

It is most definitely a bug. There is no such thing as auto-pickup in real life. One must decide to pick up everything. Auto-pickup has no place in the game and should be removed entirely.
