They chase you indefinitely if you run around like a chicken. If you run far away from their starting spot they loose intrest.
And as above stated you can also brake aggro by making them stop seeing you. They will run to the place where they last saw you, so if you disappear just for a moment its not gonna work. You have to be more crafty.
