You can beat the second boss to gain access to the crypts, or you can search around for a muddy scrap pile in the swamps from the very beginning of the game.

That second boss is a step up from sparky deer boy.
I went at him with a level 2 bow, fire arrows, troll hide + a bronze helmet. I ran veeeery fast.
