Just agro them to an area away from your base. I personally use them to chop trees and mine rocks as their attacks are easy to bait without getting hit regardless of equipment, you don't have to kill the mobs to end the invasion.

I tend to build my camps/bases on the borders of swamp/forest/plains, then all you have to do is lure any invasion into the corresponding enemy of my enemy is my friends territory, a couple of trolls can wreak havok in the swamps, not so much the plains but both ways gain you advantages to advance a tier before you would otherwise be ready, its a valid strat for normal spawns because of how poor they are and the simplistic ai
