It's hard to build inside Mistlands because of the gjall, but taking over a ruins or tower is doable. As far as I know, black metal is the only thing you must bring with you. Other metals are available from ruins and broken dvergr forts. You will need to make a farm there, but it doesn't have to be a full base.
