Stand within range of the pit, but out of sight, and put your character into sneak mode. The wolf should calm down reasonably quickly if you're actually out of sight & not running around making noise.

And pits work much better than stake walls. One thing to beware of too, is the wolf can be aggroed by wandering mobs, too, which will interrupt the process.
