not entirely flawed. I did this on an island base. i had complete no-spawn coverage on the island and a tiny islet just outside of range where the raids would spawn. not a troll pit but the principal is the same.
the problem with doing this on land is that you can't fully guarantee that the mobs will spawn in the hole. the water around my island example is what accomplishes this. plus, all the base items you spread around to try to get them to spawn in the hole have now made a bigger area that raids can happen.
