I had the same idea, and the same realization once I took a pick to one. The same thing happened in the Mistlands to me today as well. I had an idea to level-off the top of one of those jagged cliff areas next to where I already have a base built but it didn't 'flatten nicely' and instead was all faceted.
Was very disappointed.
