You must not be too far into the game. There are much better foods out there. Once you are far enough they become obsolete.

Except they're needed to create anti-poison potions as well; so when having to kill the entire neck population (50+ at my island) to get just 10 tails, things don't seem right.

Only thing that's helping a bit is killing the higher tiers.
Single star offer a guaranteed 2 tails, double stars offer a guaranteed 4 tails. Which may be enough to get enough potions going.
