Indeed they hit like a truck, Bonemass power heavily recommended.
Taming a 2 star wolf was the only time I felt the need to to exploit earth walls, because they destroyed stone walls with ease. So I just dug a pit and pulled the wolf into it with the harpoon and jumped out very quickly (I hope you have decent jump skill lol)

You can avoid that by leaving a piece of meat inside. If there are no hostiles (from the wolf's perspective) the wolf might try to eat it which starts the taming process before you respawn. Once taming has started, it will not disappear.
