The only thing I don't like is an entirely new characters with no skills. Once I'm past those really early and quick level ups I don't give skill levels a thought. I don't die very often so I can be confident that they will continue to climb for a long time, and never once has it felt like my skill levels have changed an outcome. They are just nice to have.
