This is the game! You can, as I do go for many hours in peace, but that leads to complacency and the game will punish you big time. It's just happened to me. The last 100 hours, I haven't died once and walk around the plains with no issues. I took my eye off the ball and despite having health at 190 and similar stamina, I was attacked from behind by 4 growths, just as I was about to set up a portal. Of course, I died quickly but I reckon it was my fault not the game. I've also had similar situations to the one you have and it took a while for it to sink in that preparation and patience is the key. It's frustrating to lose all your gear and for your base to get beaten up but sometimes it's time to step back and slow down. It is a survival game after all. I hope you get sorted and of course you can always get help from the community to get your gear back and I'm sure they would take care of that troll for you. Good luck.
