Keep doing what you're doing. Upgrade your gear, unlock new food (wheat and flax must be grown in the plains), and be careful with the enemies. They hit hard, and the fulings will swarm you hard. Piercing weapons work well on the Lox, if they don't bite your face off or crush it first.

And drain the tar pits. The good tar is at the bottom.
