Yeah, I'm placing at the side of walls and structures, high places. They do attack because I already saw some dropped on the ground, but they don't hunt for high places.If you find an ancient sword/armor you won't know if you really find an ancient sword/armor or a skeleton until you get really close.
Those are not much of a point of interest, more like resource node akin to copper veins or swamp guck, due to their abundance.
You can make wisp torches anywhere to light your way. I'm not sure if gjall can still attack them, seekers do not, so you could place them underneath or on the side of structures like giant remains, scrap armor, dvergr ruins, or glowing roots.
