Normal chests can carry more than black metal in "space taken," actually. You can fit roughly six in the area it would take to place a black metal chest, if you squeeze them all together.

Yeah, you can squish 4 regular chests into mostly the same area as a single black metal chest but I really don't like having to open 4 chests to find what I'm looking for. I just slap down a black metal chest and a sign over it that says what it holds.

If you need more than 1 black metal chest for each item in game you are a hoarder any way. Except for the trophies its easy to get more stuff, just a bit time consuming if you don't plan ahead.
