Turns out many days later he was still somewhere in the swamp doing whatever he likes to do. Pretty far away from his spawn too.
It would make a nice playtrough to have all bosses already spawned in their biomes, making trips there more dangerous. Like at first he hunts you but then you become the predator. Also you'd have to go monster hunting and have to track it down once it's time to kill it!

just lucky it wasn't the elder- his root spawn hits wherever you are.
