I say grind is a task done to get a reward. Those rewards are then continually collected in order to level or obtain something that unlocks more gameplay.

Valheim has a task that immediately nets you the things you need in order to unlock the next part of gameplay. It's somewhat of a grind but it's not effortless unlike cerebral ongoing mundane tasks like an mmo
