You'll have more use of them in the mid-late game, as it's far easier to lure packs of them to farm Wood/Resin instead of chopping tree's. All that wood is necessary for the absurd amounts of Coal you need for Smelting, and Resin for the numerous torches that light the night.

The only trees I chop at this stage are Fine Wood and Core Wood trees
