It is possible, if you know what you're doing, to venture into the plains in root armor and survive. The root armor will protect you against deathsquitos, and with an iron shield, you can even block a fuling.

But yeah, you need the experience of a prior playthrough and the knowledge how the combat system works (especially parrying), to be successful at that.
