This game has actual controller support, so no, it's nothing as hacky as controller to kbm schemes. I play this game on PC (Linux) with a controller, so I think I can claim that it works just fine like that. I'm actually more confused trying to figure out why Ryzilynt's friends were complaining about the building rotation, as the only problems with playing this with a controller are inherrent in the basic game controls, and are no different between kbm and controller.

I think the (alleged) issue is that you can rotate building parts with the scroll wheel on the mouse slightly faster than you can flick the stick with the controller. From my experience, it doesn't take long to get that so it's very quick, so I don't see it as a significant issue.
