Hugin isn't the best at explaining this step. It's obvious if you're used to crafting survival games and already digging through the UI to see what you can make and entirely opaque if you're new to the genre.

Another quite hidden detail, there's an unlabelled icon of a hammer to the right of the workbench UI, this is a button that repairs tools in your inventory.
