From what I've seen on the all-knowing YouTube, they stay aggressive forever. But only that group ... other groups you encounter will still be friendly.

I guess a Valheim purist would build new gear and go back and finish them off. Personally, when I lose my gear in a seeming impossible situation, I cheat and use "ghost mode" to walk in, get my gear, re-equip everything, and then turn ghost mode back off.
