Obviously they *can* but it seems rarer than vanilla Valheim conspiring with Steam to corrupt its own worlds honestly.

I'd recommend the generic Unity games mod manager at https://thunderstore.io/package/ebkr/r2modman and suggest your first mod should be SimpleBackup or BetterServerConfig to make recovering from any losses easy.
