The iron cage structure count as solid items. It's just a texture with alpha holes in them. This has been requested several times now (to let smoke through for instance), but has received lukewarm response from the devs AFAIK.

Their focus is currently on Mistlands. Maybe we'll see an update on the bars in the future. Who knows?
