I think a better solution might be to revamp the menu so that you choose the item first from a list of things you are able to construct, and then the UI takes you to the Craft menu if you don't have that item, or the Upgrade menu if you've already made one. Of course, then you'll get people who DO want to make a backup copy of the tool/weapon complaining. To mangle a quote: "You can satisfy some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't satisfy all of the people all of the time." One of the correct solutions to this extremely annoying problem is not to be able to deconstruct items, but to PERMANENTLY remain on the last menu that the user selected, whether it be CREATE or UPGRADE. The problem that keeps happening to me is this extremely counter-intuitive game mechanic that keeps deciding for me that I want to create something when in fact I just want to upgrade. For example, I just made a new iron pickaxe for 20 iron. Went to the upgrade menu and upgraded it once but then ran out of upgrade materials. Left the crafting table, opened a chest above it, grabbed the missing mats, went back to the table and upgraded the item. Whoops, the game moved me back to create tab! The biggest problem is that it doesn't always move you back in every scenario, so it's just a terrible UX. Just a useless griefing mechanic. Please fix this!!! I just wasted an hour hunting mud piles only to lose 20 additional iron in the blink of an eye because of a bad GUI UX choice.
