Update: still looking for the Elder. I will be able to fully switch to swamp-tier foods before I find him, and get a full set of root armour too, at this rate.

Plains, Plains everywhere... I should probably head back towards the centre of the world, but I'm committed to heading (roughly) southwest for now until I get too close to the edge of the map.
