I like mob attacks; they liven up chores. Also, fighting minor mobs is the way to skill up on weapons. Lastly, it's just fun. When you win, of course.

To minimize mob attacks, don't go out at night. Stay in and put things away, or build stuff. If you don't have a base, make a campfire and rest by the fire.

Protect your base. At first, round-pole fence works fine. Later, you'll want to dig a moat or build walls. And yes, you may be attacked while doing those things.

Once you have a safe base defer chores for night and bad weather. Maintain a stack of "to be filed" chests. Good weather and daylight is the time for exploring, hunting, gathering, building your masterpiece and planting teeny-tiny carrot seeds, not putting things away.
