Players can manipulate the terrain to the point of causing lots of issues up to and including trolling others. They can also very quickly deplete resources. This is why usually private servers have a main map and a resource map or two that they reset every so many weeks.

If your expectations are that the game is more open to others with their servers like the 70,000+ ark unofficial servers, its just not the case here.

Best treat this more like a single player game or one with your friends co-optively. Otherwise, you can as others said use the looking for servers or make your own to match your wants. Basically you just didn't understand the game in these regards is all.
