Use sharp stakes. That tends to keep the trolls at bay. I noticed this when I knocked mine down to enlarge the base area, and almost immediately had a troll attack. With them up I get the undead usually since I'm swamping to get gear for the Bonemass fight.

Best practice is to encircle the base with a deep moat, even going so far as to raise up the inner land level to make that moat really deep. Don't worry if the bottom has some water, just don't make it so deep you have to swim because if you fall in and can't jump to climb the wall you are screwd (or you can create a portal specifically to get you out, but that's a waste of resources). Using sharp stakes on the inner ring line your base area, then put up a stake wall (or stone, whatever based on the biome you are in) behind the stakes. Critters tend to fall into the moat for easy farming. Make sure you have workbenches you can use to make repairs easily and to prevent spawns inside.

It's just too bad the game doesn't allow proper tunnelling underground or the absolute best would be a tunnel entrance.
