I build a hut close to the Trader, two walls going out from the shield dome, just use some posts first to find the edge. I have not bothered with a wall at the shield end before as the mobs do not tend to go into that area. If you want a wall with door into trade area, place door first as close as you can put it and make sure it is 90 degrees the to axis of the shield circle.
