I hope you keep multiple older backups, because if you just overwrite your one and single backup with a broken world, then you effectively destroyed your one and only good save game.

That's the reason the game now does multiple backups.

Default is 2, so I wouldn't really bother too much with it. It's added security from loss of data, and that can never be bad, right?
