There is a whole tradition or culture amoung sound designers to reuse old sounds. Another one like the Wilhelm scream is the 'whoosh' sound from the final boss in the original doom. I hear it in movies and TV productions regularly.

Im pretty sure Ive heard the death sigh for blobs in some old game - also used for a blob type monster.
