You can't really protect it even if you wanted, because undead walk under water with ease. You can't really wall it off.

Idk if it makes sense for the leeches to attack seemingly random pile of wood. That's some serious motivation against boats. Previous life grievances perhaps?

I'm stranded at the swamp running out of arrows and tools , there are no deer hides or leather scraps :D to build a raft.
