Deer do run towards you, however. This does happen all the time, especially if you are pretty much ignoring them and just running full-tilt through the terrain.

No, they don't try to attack you; I'd assumed that was just part of the "running towards you" bit.

No they literally try to do damage. So it's the mods all along.
