I don't even know how to roll, so it's not a necessity, and you don't fight a troll until you're ready, or use a bow. You can run from pretty much everything in the game if you aren't prepared to fight it.

I don't know what you mean about lack of initial weapons. You can make a stone axe out of sticks and rocks. That's plenty for the meadows.
