The preference of course, is if one is going to commit 2-3 days of game time to taming wolves, take the time to commit oneself to taming a 2 star wolf. Once one has the gear to survive in mountain biomes, find a convenient place to dig a taming pit. Preferably near where the mountains border the Black Forest or meadows & an appropriate shelter, and where there is little or no danger of the wolf being attacked, especially by drakes. Once a wolf is captured in the pit, it is important to have enough food to feed it over the course of a couple of days, and important not to lose Line of Sight (LoS) with it until the following day cycle begins. Taming pits work best as player constructed pens can easily be destroyed, especially by starred wolves. I once had a 2 star wolf despawn in the short time period it took me to turn around (while at the edge of my taming pit) and in two hits kill a Fenrig.
While taming the wolf, it is also important to be able to maintain LoS, while weaponless and crouching and to be able to move far enough away for the wolf to lose any agitation it may have. Being crouched and weaponless, helps to facilitate a calming effect on wild animals. Wolves can tend not to eat offered food when they are agitated. The taming pit should be deep enough, with sides steep enough, that it takes a couple of running jumps for the player to exit. Once the first evening after capture has passed while never losing LoS, the pit can be covered by floor boards to prevent it being seen or attacked by drakes.
Starred wolves only seem to appear after the evening cycle begins (6:00 pm game time). They also tend to only appear when being attacked by a group of 3 or more, so be careful to identify the starred wolf so as not to kill it.
