i used the stagbreaker as a metal detector to find silver. you'll need meads until you can forge yourself the wolf chest armour or cloak. It's obviously not intended and i don't think it offers such an advantage that merits the time doing it that way.
imo you should just wipe out bonemass and then start silver age
