Next time this happens, just make another world, put a chest there, put the iron in the chest, log back in to your main world, sail home, log back on your alt world, get the iron, log back to your main world and voila.

Or just use other worlds for all your mining and not leave your main world base to begin with, if you're gonna go that route.
