Edit - just to note that I'll use the log in/out to move metal around if it's too far from home to sail or I don't have time to do so.

I get that and I can understand that kind of person because sometimes I like to play fair too.
In that case, you can swim until you die than when you respawn you can build another boat to retrieve all your belonging the tombstone will not sink to the bottom of the ocean and it marked on the map so it is possible to retrieve it back without any of those you called as mechanic abuse and cheating.
It just time-consuming and just hope that when you go to retrieve it you're not facing any Serpent on your way.
