We all use ditches, but it's a cheese of the game mechanics, not a designed in feature.

My main base in H&H has no moat. When trolls are invading, run away from your base and kite them to where you want to fight.

I made some structures with towers, vantage points and walls a little further away from my base where I run to whenever I get raided. So far it works well.
