The clue system is pretty awful. It only works if you actually know what the boss is already and therefore what common enemies it is associated with.

On the starting shrine you will find a depiction of a deer head... at the alter you will find an actual deer statue.

Not sure what you were hoping for as clues...

The first one wasn't as bad. I tried pelts and trophies. The Elder was a lot more obscure, because you get several items specific to the grey dwarves.
