Generaly its better to find meadows to build your base as close to swamp, plains and mountain.
Now the main reason:

Meadows spawns in pigs and allows you to plant almost every food in it, making them a perfect farms. Before you star farming loxes, the pig meat is your main source of food to cook.
Not to mention, only thing you need to worry is raids to lose your animals. In case of a drake raid, its recomened to have 2 pigs hidden inside a pen so they dont get killed.

Black forest should be your secondary choice for a base if meadows are not a option. And even then you need a good terrain to build it (lots of holes and clifs are not recomened).

Swamp is horrible choice to build. The non-stop rain, poision slimes and not much space to build anything realy, unless you bring a lot of stone and raise the ground araund it. (you can get attacked by night by ghousts tho)
Outpost with portal near a surfling spawn is much better.

Mountain i would only recomend it to build a wolf farm there and if possible inside the mountain to avoid drakes killing your wolfs. Main reason for them staying there is due to howling.

Its a good idea to move to plains once you have at least silver full armor (so you dont get 1 shot by moskitos when building).

Also, always leave 1 portal on your starting island to save time changing your buffs from bosses.
