You will see people periodically advert new servers on the forums or people looking for mates so that is one option.

The game was not made for PvP so somebody can just dismantle your entire base easily in seconds, dig a giant pit next to it that will take forever to cover over, pick up all your stacks of metal and quit the game, all while the PvP toggle is off and you can't touch them.
