That is pretty much what you do, though. If you're taking on 2-3 fulings at once or the wayward deathsquito then I trust you can win those fights without being hit. Just pop Bone...mass when it's time to take on a village or you get ambushed, get your flax farm going early and soon you'll have even better armor.

But you really don't need to. You can play carefully enough to not need bonemass power.

Typically I have silver gear and am taking on gob villages with a plains farm and still have not killed bonemass. Yes i end up with lots of trenches in mountains for no reason... but I don't have to worry about a hunt event either.

Normally I won't kill bonemass until I have Moder ready to kill and at that point I have barley and flax ready to go. More than anything else I just want the bonemass power to fight Moder with. So I will set up the Moder fight with eggs and do them both on the same day. Depending on the seed I usually have some totems as well.
