Find an area where a few small valleys converge, terrain wall the ends off and cover the perimeter with spawn stopping constructions, place misty lamps everywhere. I used the terrain to my advantage and utilized premade Towers, Harbors, Dig Sites for starter bases, it's entirely doable--as in the other biomes, you need to make a strategy from your surroundings...got Plains bases, Swamp bases--can make them anywhere with proper planning.
