Leave stumps they seem to grow back as small trees eventualy getting quite big. I had a birch tree in the center of main house as a display tree with a surrounding bench and it still keep growing had to cut it down eventually now a small branch starts growing out of stump :)

I would like to see a screen shot because what you are saying contradicts what everyone else is saying.
