I wouldn't build a full blown base. Too tedious and risky. However, you do need an outpost for extractors and some "vegetables".

That being said, you only really need black metal and mistland is usually very close to plains. No need to drag it from your main base, just go get it in the nearest plains. You just need something to smelt it.
