Exactly that bolded part. When bad luck happens, you can get unexpectedly ganged up on by multiple fast enemies while you're stuck between a rock and a hard place and you die.
It rarely happens but it can happen and no amount of armor will save you when you get stunlocked to death, whereas more speed might have gotten you out of trouble.

They say that plane crashes, etc usually are not due to one failure, but a chain of multiple failures. I think that applies here as well, and it's hard to say what one thing might have prevented a death.
